The First 15 Minutes: Your Emergency Water Damage Checklist

A pipe burst or a roof leak can feel overwhelming. What you do in the first 15 minutes can save you thousands of dollars in restoration costs. Follow these steps immediately:
1. Stop the Flow (Minute 1-3)
Locate your main water shut-off valve. It’s usually in your crawl space, garage, or near the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops.
If the leak is from a specific appliance (like a toilet or washing machine), turn the local valve behind the unit.
2. Manage the Power (Minute 4-6)
Safety First: If water is dripping through light fixtures or pooling near outlets, do not walk through the water.
Shut off the breaker: Go to your electrical panel and turn off the power to the affected rooms. If the panel is in a wet area, call your utility company immediately.
3. Minimize Property Loss (Minute 7-10)
Lift and Protect: Move small furniture, rugs, and electronics to a dry area.
Clear the Floor: Pick up anything porous, like books, magazines, or cardboard boxes, as these will deteriorate quickly and can cause staining.
4. Document for Insurance (Minute 11-13)

Take Video & Photos: Before you start cleaning, capture the standing water, the source of the leak, and any damaged belongings. Your insurance adjuster will need this "before" evidence for your claim.
5. Call the Pros (Minute 14-15)
Contact North Idaho Flood and Fire: Water hides in places you can't see (inside walls and under subfloors). Professional extraction and IICRC-certified drying are the only ways to prevent permanent structural damage and mold.
